Yeah you can use a monitor, I had to do that when somebody sent me a used destroyed laptop. He said it had "minor cosmetic damage" which really meant "back of the screen demolished to the point where it disconnects every time you open and close the laptop and eventually will sever itself from the keyboard". So in short, I had to use a desktop cpu monitor plugged into the keyboard.
